There must be a constant flow of water over gills. If the water is stopped (or they are taken out of water), the animal will die from too little oxygen. Without water, the gills dry and stick to each other, and gas exchange cannot take place.

  • if there was a means to pass water through their mouths wouldn't they be able to survive? also, if they were placed in an environment which contained a high concentration of H2O in the gaseous form of steam would that be enough to keep the plasma membranes moist enough and the gils from sticking together?
