Taiwanese American singer-songwriter and independent producer Dawen describes his music as "neo-soul with socially conscious lyricism" that he hopes "will further the dialogue on racism and social injustice in American society." And sure enough, if you listen closely to his lyrics, you'll find that it speaks directly from his personal experience as an Asian American and challenges us to reflect on issues that have shaped our collective "American" consciousness. HoChie Tsai, creator of TaiwaneseAmerican.org takes a moment to catch up with Dawen and hear some of his perspectives.

  • I am sorry you experienced racism. If you integrated with the Chinese and considered yourself true Taiwanese Chinese you would not have experiecned isolation. So therefore, stop being delusional. you're Chinese and there is no such thing as Taiwanese Americans cuz Taiwanese is an ethnicity not a nationality.

  • thay dont treat you any different in hong kong

  • 6:33 "If you are Taiwanese American and you want to be in the NBA, go for it" -- sounds like a message from Dawen to Jeremy Lin!

  • Hi HoChie and Dawen! I'm glad you guys were able to connect out there. It's a small world indeed. Keep up the awesome work :)
