Fish scales analysis is a tedious task that currently is being performed manually by a large number of scientists in order to determine the age and back-calculate lengths of different fish species. It mainly consists on measuring distances between different concentric ring structures called annuli similar to the ones present on tree trunks.

Nowadays there are a few tools to improve the efficiency of this process allowing a certain level of abstraction and automation, but those are not specifically designed to work with fish scales, very specific hardware is required and their cost is too expensive for an average research group.

The main objective of this application was to produce a low-cost software tool that can be used to assist with the fish scales analysis process. The input of the system is a collection of fish scales images stored in digital format and the output is a solution file containing the extracted data, such as the estimated age of each fish and other relevant information. The application includes some automation to perform common tasks and will also allow user interaction to analyze images manually with a set of tools specifically designed for this purpose.
