I think the same toy co. came up with another version where the plane was launched from the runway up the string by a spring activated system. The plane pivoted around by itself when it started to glide back down. I was never able to get my home made 'U fly it' to do that. I eventually took my set up to the back yard. I ran the string about 50' from a tall fence to the patio table that I used masking tape to mark out a carrier deck onto. I put catch cables on the deck with hooks on the planes.
I wanted one when I was a kid, but never got one. Instead, I made my own using a few different plastic model planes. I put "bread bag twist ties" shaped into hooks on the top of the planes. One near the front, and one at the top of the tail. I ran fishing line from the top shelf of our kitchen cabinet down the long hall into our living room. Had to be 25' or more! I placed the plane on the shelf with the hooks over the string, and tugged the string tied to a control stick when I was ready. Cool!
Wow, I had this toy in Australia, but it was a simplier version, it had a single engine plane and joystick control, must have been the version 'other countries' got.
Sure brought back some memories of the early 70's, must been maybe 73, 74.
Awesome! I went on to work in the machining field. I'm a CNC operator. And I still love to tinker with toys!
