@medini2 I disagree with most of Hindu philosophy, much of which is Theism. Of course there are always choices; even for one who knows clearly what they want. Although "wants" are attachments which foster illusion and confusion to begin with. But even for one who has no wants, choices are there. In life we are traveling down a path and can always alter our path if it is not leading to freedom and clear mind. We should never justify not making changes because questionable teachings discourage it.
@SageBodisattva krishnamurti said choice is an illusion..when we know clearly what we want to do then there is no choice. choice arises only as a result of confusion. that sounds right, somehow. why is it that i see numerous choices, but am unable to act on the details?
so what really makes me any different than an animal?
@medini2 Instinctual animals dont' have choice. However, as human beings we have the option of removing ourselves from detrimental situations. Also on choosing how we let certain situations effect us. Being annoyed or perturbed by others is something that can be addressed by an adjustment of our minds. Ego plays a large part in common offenses taken. Bodily harm or death can be addressed by altering our surrounding environment as such as to ensure peace and tranquility.
@medini2 OR, maybe, the moral is "survival of the fittest" ?
The Alpha males had been terrorizing all the other baboons & taking the perks.
How do we guard the doors to our senses we are being stressed daily by our lack of security in situations in life, or tormented on the job, by police?
Saw a movie today called, "Stress: the Portrait of a Killer". A scientist studied a group of baboons for over 30years for stress hormones & it's effects. He found that the Alpha males had very little effects of stress. And the rest of the baboons were miserable, hateful as well and had fast heartbeats, high bloodpressures & plaques in their arteries, more fat on the abdomen, etc.
Then, most of the tribe was wiped out by eating a tainted carcass.
All the Alpha males were gone. The group left were peaceful! They didn't fight among themselves. They didn't exhibit any hateful behaviors. They were healthier & stress hormones tested as low as the Alpha males' had tested previously.
Maybe we can let go of our preoccupation w/ how are we going to survive when the shtf.
The moral of this story may be "the meek shall inherit the earth", not just eat dirt!!
@SageBodisattva what is the cause of having these addictions? why does the brain go down there? why does the brain look for self pleasure? why is there a deficit and suffering?
@Judy101101 I would say right conduct and virtue wash away bad habits. Meditation is more about emptying the mind of the clutter; unclouding the mind so that it may be in it's true pure nature. The mind becomes addicted and lingers in the negative to seek superficial gratifications: attachments to sensations of the flesh and various chemical reactions of the brain that bring the self pleasure. Of course when these pleasures are over we experience the deficit and suffering follows.
I fully agree. :)
