Equity can either be private or public and these terms are often used in the press. In the transition from the former to the latter there is typically an IPO. Public equity is also known as stocks or shares.

  • Isnt private equity an alternative investment class? Previously called Leveraged Buyout? Where Private Equity Firms take public comapnies private, turn them around and exit via an Initial Public Offering of the company the took public or sell them to another company or add more debt to the company and use this borrowed money to pay the private equity firm fund's investors?

  • @hunjsuk2 Private eq. often considered alt. asset class (along w. hedge funds) - it is less liquid, typ. less transparent; stocks (public equities) or stock funds -> considered traditional. Private eq. funds can undertake lev. buyouts but lev. buyout just 1 type of transaction - private eq. firms can invest in newer private cos. (venture capital) or more mature private cos - term private eq. generically just refers to equity of unlisted cos - i.e. non-public companies. Hope it helps, best, MF
