Christie's sold nearly $12m of contemporary Middle Eastern art and jewellery at its two auctions this week, breaking 42 world records, the auction house said on Thursday.
Sales for its jewellery auction on Wednesday topped $3.9m while the total amount for the modern and contemporary art by Turkish, Iranian and Arab artists grossed the auction house $7.98m. Pre-sale estimates for both auctions were $11-13m.
A large copper and wooden dome, entitled The Message/Messenger, by the Saudi artist Abdulnasser Gharem sold for $842,500, beating pre-sale estimates of $70,000-100,000, and breaking the world record for the artist at auction. Proceeds from the sale went to the Edge of Arabia's education programme.
Other notable lots included one of the largest natural salt water pearls ever recorded, which sold for $254,500.
