  • I thought, from what I'd read, that this was intended as more of an "affordable" radio than specifically a child's one?

  • Sure could have been.

In my Crosley Pup, I use a UV-199, with the adapter to WD12 basing. Outstanding performance, and almost mint condition. BTW, I have an extra UV-199/WD-12 adapter FS. These adapters erre made in the 1920s. Also, the way I was taught to remember which was the UV or UX, the pins are either (V)ery short or (X)tra long. I use the UV-199 since it is so much cheaper, and I only have 2 WD-12s.

  • WOW! How wonderful your radio is still in use today. I'm sure your Aunt enjoys listening to here radio programs. Yes, transistors are much more reliable and long lasting. I was a little younger than 13 when I got my first Crystal Set. Of course I enjoyed listening to the radio late at night and it was surprising how many long distant station I could pull in. I also discovered that I could jam my older brother's radio with my crystal set, and would do so until threaten with bodily harm. Rick

  • Indeed, you are right. My very first radio was bought to me when I was 13 years. It was a transistor table top model. It was OM, OT (tropical wave) and OC. No FM. It runing well in my 82 years old aunt´s house nowadays. It was produced in Brazil and the Brand is Vozzo.

Transistor radios are really long lasting and trouble free aren´t they? But the tubes are so elegant. I don´t know if the sound better since I have never seen a vaccuum tube radio "life". Best regards, Mario.

  • Crystal sets are fun. I don't remember how many I built and experimented with but it was a lot of them. When you get a chance, read the text on the back cover of my book, my brother wrote the text. You'll like it.

  • I love the crystal sets as well, problem is, I can't hear them, I'm 60% deaf, have to wear hearing aids, but before I lost my hearing I loved to build and experiment with them (well I can always get an amplifier)

  • It is a fun, child's radio. It is difficult to use and the performance is better than a crystal set. It's another nice piece of radio history.
