In the movie,Mathews character does redirect the doc becaise he gets to explain that he later married the girl and there was not that much of an age difference.You said there was no redirect of the witness

he does say that the next day, but not on the same trial. But even when he does say that he says if he had known that the Doctor had done that he would never have brought him to the trial in the first place, so he still condemns the doctor and agrees he was a criminal
