A free, drop-In, non-auditioned community choir started at Harbour Centre in November 2009 after Richards began community choir leadership training with Shivon Robinsong and Denis Donnelly, conductors of the 400-member Getting' Higher Choir in Victoria. Donnelly is the former director of the Victoria Conservatory of Music while Robinsong is a founder and director of Hollyhock on Cortes Island, a leading educational retreat centre. The community choir relocated to the Woodward's site in September 2010 in partnership with Portland Hotel Society.

Summer 2010, SFU Community Engagement Through the Arts, in partnership with Hollyhock, presented two Singing City, Community Choir master classes. There were more than 100 attendees for sessions by:
Ysaye M. Barnwell, PhD, who performed with the internationally renowned African-American female a cappella group, Sweet Honey in The Rock, for over 20 years. She has been building "vocal communities" around the world for many years. www.ymbarnwell.com, and
Rhiannon, a gifted singer and beloved master teacher. From her stellar collaborations with Bobby McFerrin to her groundbreaking ensemble and solo performances. She teaches a unique, body-based vocal improvisation process that draws from both music and theatre. http://www.rhiannonmusic.com/
