just came back from Chile, Punta Arenas. On New Years Eve 2010 were thousands of sardines washed up on the beach. It was on two places I was. Those two places were 60km away from each other. Same picture though. Locals couldnt tell me why that is.

No, that's not likely. We're not sure yet whether they have a disease called VHS (a not uncommon disease of some marine fishes), or perhaps encounter very cold water, or low oxygen water.
