CA: It was my riff. That was all me getting all funky and stuff.First of all, They said he (James Brown) actually played the damn record in front of them. It was surprising to see David Bowie's reaction because he had great respect for James Brown as did I. So Bowie said `Let's see what kind of activity it gets. If it charts and does real good, then we'll sue him.' Still, it was real flattering for David to have had James Brown steal from him.

Whatever you feel about Bowie, it goes like this-

Carlos Alomar wrote the riff, and before he played with Bowie in 1974, he backed up James Brown too. Alomar was the house guitarist at the Apollo and Bowie hired almost the whole rhythm section.

Bowie decided not to sue JB unless it became a hit. It didn't, so Bowie let him go with it.

To this day, Alomar is pissed that he didn't get the credit on the JB riff even though he still gets paid off "Fame".

Is it safe to say that everyone in the history of music has stolen from other musicians, who themselves stole from other musicians? It is a vicious cycle in music.

James Brown ruined his own music. He alienated his best players and by 1975 was chasing trends and making some truly horrible songs.

Bowie's Fame is a much better track than this piece of theft.

@tylerneely42 It'll never happen. Bowie has too much respect for him.

Intellectual theft is never "right" and just because you are who you are should not supersede the law for any reason.
