Yes, he is absolutely a real dog. His name is: Champion Chief Red Cloud "DAKOTA" and he worked with Mickey for 3 years straight.
He was replaced in 2008. We were never told the reason. He Championed at 11 months old and is a canine good citizen and also a registered therapy dog.

It's the trash can trick. Snag a spot right behind a trash can facing the direction of the parade, and no one can stand in front of you.

I can't remember/tell from watching the video, but he's at certain locations during certain points of the dance sequence, I just forget :) Ironically, he once worked at the Haunted Mansion at Disneyland.
