Understanding and clarifying the position of women in Islam is a real test for the entire Muslim world. It has thus become a contentious subject. However, the early Islamic history has no resemblance to what the Muslim women in our current age has been going through.
When International Women's Day is celebrated annually throughout the world to honor women of all background, celebrate their achievements and address the discrimination and hardships they face, Br Irshad Osman (Naleemi) spoke about the current "somewhat devalued" status of Muslim women compared to their predecessors.
The two part Khutbah was delivered at Danforth Islamic Centre on April 8 and May 13, 2011. Br Irshad Osman (Naleemi) showed statistics on how the disparity between men and women is prevalent in Muslim communities and how the recognition of women is sometimes marred by male-centric and cultural interpretations of Islam's scriptural sources.
