World fx Inc. came to Carbondale, IL to apply a new plastic cover on the Fuller Dome Home on July 6-7th in 2008. The plastic was cut into 30 gores and sewn together by Bill Ulrich. Bill and his brother Todd are from Cincinnati, OH and have been custom manufacturing globes for over ten years. They used their knowledge and experience to construct this large plastic cover. For more information about the Ulrich team you can visit this website: http://www.realworldfx.com/

The cover is an integral part of keeping out the weather while the RBF Dome NFP works to raise the funds needed to restore the first ever inhabitable geodesic dome home; lived in by Anne and Buckminster Fuller in the 1960's.

  • Great song. Especially, "Outside the box you don't stand in the corner no more." Who wrote and sung it??

  • I put a link to the CD in the (more info) space to the right of this video. It's a must for Bucky fanatics. If I'm not mistaken, it was recorded in the FullerDomeHome you see in the video.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • what da purpose of a dome in a dome! hehehe

  • thanks so much for preserving a valuable historical environmental control unit.

  • I have a dome house. lived in it for 26 years. The problems start when you need roof work. It is almost impossible to find any roofing company that will do the job. I had prices from 29 to 45,000. Then they want you to replace all skylites for another bundle, even if they don't leak and still look good. I still love the house, but it does have its' issues.

  • As Bucky said, "All the world, properly informed of the design and invention revolution, would welcome it. Science, not politics, centralizes society." Looking to the past only as a springboard to the future, Bucky reminds us how, though it appeared impossible at the time, "the telegraph wire communized the world."

  • Absolutely fantastic News!!! I used to 'hang out' with Mike Mitchel and other Fullerites at the Dome in the early 70's when Mitchel owned it and was putting together The World Man Band. He had an exceptional keyboardist named John that was a virtuoso on the synthesizer. Walking over to visit one afternoon and over a block away I could hear John amped up in the Dome! Haunting and unforgettable! The Dome did provide some great acoustics often times in those early Carbondale days!

    Go Dome Go!

  • These buildings are starting to become the future that Bucky envisioned decades ago. I've seen what the Japanese and the Green folks are doing and it's just wonderful.

  • You'd have to ask Corny about something like that. I remember him talking about it.

  • Hooray for the dome! It looked like it went really smoothly. Did you save the lawn jart that was stuck in the old cover? You should display it somewhere. :)
