In hindsight I was probably doing a few things wrong here, mainly going a bit too fast for the conditions (was hoping to catch some riders further down the road!) and then coming round the right side of a large left turning vehicle - one which is big enough to block my view of any other vehicles coming out of the sideroad! Was a very graceful wipeout despite how it appears in the clip!

Luckily I got away with a grazed elbow, sore hip and a mildly bruised ego! The bus driver and a pedestrian (not on the vid) did check if I was OK which was nice :-)

  • Damn, that could have been worse. You can see some oil on the ground when you stand up... hmm not good after the heavy rain fall.

  • @gaz545 Yeah oil can be a pita, at least with this crash I was expecting to come off. I hit an oil patch once heading round a sharp right and had to slow right down as there was a car crashed into the kerb. As I came round I found out why - oil patch! Went down like a sack of spuds except that time I took the impact on the chin :-(

  • Quite lucky there, could of been much much worse.

  • @NottinghamCyclist Yeah, as soon as I saw the car after coming round the bus I had a feeling it wasn't going to end well.....seemed to happen a lot slower in real life ;-)

  • @ilscozzese The bike was remarkably OK :-) Don't think I even damaged the bar tape which is rather surprising - May have added a couple more scratches to the edge of the pedal though :-D

  • @PeowPeowPeowLasers And yet the car driver ignored the give way and pulled out without even checking. That's a fail, and however wrong the overtake across the junction is, there's no excuse for not expecting an overtake there. The driver of that car had no justification at all.

  • @CyclingMikey We'll have to disagree there. The driver of that car was entirely justified in presuming that nobody would overtake a bus at that point.

The cyclist here should never have been where he was. 100% his fault I'm afraid, and that's coming from an experienced cyclist (me).

  • @ilscozzese Might I just add that I can't believe nobody has asked how the bike is!

  • Ooh, that was a very poorly judged overtake!

The bus can be seen indicating left to turn off into a side road. You can also see a car about to emerge from that junction and turn right, towards you.

I have to agree with the others here who lay the blame with you. You were lucky to get away relatively unscathed.

HC Rule 167: DO NOT overtake where you might come into conflict with other road users. For example: approaching or at a road junction on either side of the road ...

  • @2009jimmy2009 Whilst that cycling wasn't the best, the car driver is most at fault for not checking the road is clear before pulling out.

  • @PeowPeowPeowLasers Well, that's certainly true enough, but OTOH the car driver is rather more at fault - for pulling out past a bus when they had no idea if the road was clear or not. That's a far worse mistake.

  • @CyclingMikey You have to be joking. You're overtaking stationary traffic past a junction, and you blame others for your mistake?

    NEVER overtake at a junction.

  • I THINK YOU WHERE TO BLAME HERE, BUT THESE THINGS HAPPEN, ANOTHER SCARE TO BOAST ABOUT IN THE PUB!

  • Embarrassing much ?
