After the success of Walter (now Wendy) Carlos's 1968 album SWITCHED-ON BACH, the record industry experienced a brief surge of cash-in moog exploitation albums. Some of the best of these include The Moog Machine's SWITCHED-ON ROCK (Columbia Records), The Electric Concept Orchestra's MOOG GROOVE (Limelight Records), and THE HAPPY MOOG! (Pickwick Records).

THE HAPPY MOOG! was masterminded by Jean Jacques Perrey and Harry Breuer, both stalwarts of the music industry. Perrey in particular is remembered as an early pioneer of electronica; he's best known for his 1970 album MOOG INDIGO as well as for his collaborations with Gershon Kingsley.

Here are the best tracks from the Happy Moog album:

1) "Space Express"
2) "Short Circuit"
3) "Paris 2079"
4) "Saturn Ski Jump"

I found my copy of the album at a Goodwill store in Massillon, Ohio. It was fifty cents.

  • I should get a sex change so I'll be that good at a moog ;)

  • Then again, Walter was a wiz even before he was Wendy.

  • Or was there a gender transtition?

  • Yes, Walter Carlos became Wendy Carlos following sexual reassignment surgery in 1972. Her first album released as "Wendy" came out in 1979.

  • my God, all of this is VERY strange and weird. the music and pictures in this video sound clip. i'm a synthesizer fan myself but i could NOT listen to something like this every day not even for a short while. i compose Techno and Gothic/Industrial dance from synthesizers, but ofcourse I would.

  • I know exactly what you mean. After I listen to an album like this I am just dying for some loud guitars! If nothing else, it's an illustration of how dramatically what we consider "electronic music" has changed in the last 50 years.

  • I just knew it had to be JJP. I met him in 2005 and marvelled at his sense of humour.

  • I bought this album when it came out. It was in the bargain records at Thrifty Drug in CA. I still have it. It was the real deal back then, high tech. Theses sounds are the basis for all that is new today. So, there is no comparison to what's available today. Primitive yes. Innovative, yes.

  • I can't stop laughing, oh god i think i'm losing my mind to this music !

  • I'll take this voer (over) anytime the modern crap they have out today. :)

  • this is quite entertaining-thanks for posting!

  • The first song makes me think of the Moog Train. All aboard to Moogville! The second song makes me think of a toy factory for some reason.

  • I love the Space Express! I imagine the train world!

  • I have this record album, "The Happy Moog". It's in great shape, including the album jacket.

  • Yes folks, it truly existed once - a time when even PURELY ELECTRONICALLY GENERATED SOUND had warmth. Listen to how "primitive" this is! Harkens back to the days before you had to bust your ass engineering everything inside-out to get sound that isn't colder than the night side of Pluto. Charming, isn't it?

  • It would nice if someone would remaster this album. Saturn Ski Jump is a classic.
