Good jazz here. Didn't know anything about this group so I went to Wikipedia and found the following information:

"Sir John Phillip William Dankworth, CBE (born 20 September 1927), known in his early career as Johnny Dankworth, is an English jazz composer, saxophonist and clarinetist.

In 1950, Dankworth formed a small group known as the Dankworth Seven as a vehicle for his writing activities as well as a showcase for several young jazz soloists, including himself (alto sax), Jimmy Deuchar (trumpet), Eddie Harvey (trombone), Don Rendell (tenor sax), Bill Le Sage (piano), Eric Dawson (bass) and Tony Kinsey (drums). After three successful years, the group was wound up when Dankworth formed his big band in 1953."

He has played with Charlie Parker and Sidney Bechet, and was voted Musician Of The Year in 1949. He also wrote several scores for movies and TV programs, including The Avengers, 1961-1964. Cool!

Here is the Johnny Dankworth Seven on a JAZZ PARADE 78 rpm record playing some very fine jazz. Enjoy!

  • "is this release on Discogs dot com?" — no it isn't yet, please add :-)

FYI, the BBC are using your vid:

Glad to see these videos getting spread around. It's all about the music!

Probably the combination of a decent vintage Johnny Dankworth record released on a noted vintage British jazz record label (with the mandatory British tax stamp) being played on a vintage high end British turntable helped make this video the right choice for this blog article. Cool!

    Yes.

Add to Discogs though please, as it needs serious jazz music lovers & collectors adding rare stuff to the massive release database.

    Thanks ;-)

  • BTW, British naming convention error: you don't call a sir "Sir Dankworth", instead it's either "Sir John(ny)" or "Sir John(nny) Dankworth".

Nice vid though — is this release on Discogs dot com?

  • as always, amazing!

  • Great British jazz, this was recorded in 1950. Esquire jazz released a few cd's a while back, I have a few. All the leading Brit jazz players on them. they're superb.

  • love it so much. its like the instruments are having a conversation with each other.
