The Kiss, Dear Maid, Thy Lip Has Left (Text by Lord Byron)
The kiss, dear maid, thy lip has left,
Shall never part from mine,
Till happier hours restore the gift
Untainted back to thine.

Thy parting glance, which fondly beams,
An equal love, may see;
[The]1 tear that from thine eyelid streams
Can weep no change in me.

I ask no pledge to make me blest
In gazing when alone;
Nor one memorial for a breast
Whose thoughts are all thine own.

Nor need I write - to tell the tale
My pen were doubly weak:
Oh! What can idle words avail,
Unless the heart could speak?

By day or night, in weal or woe,
[This]1 heart, no longer free,
Must bear the love it cannot show,
And silent ache for thee.

Der Scheidekuß von deinem Mund
Wird nie von meinem fliehn,
Bis unentweiht dir bessre Stund'
Zurückerstattet ihn.

Dein Scheideblick, der zärtlich glüht,
Schau Lieb' gleich der von dir,
Die Zähre, die dein Auge sprüht,
Kann ändern nichts in mir.

Du sollst kein Pfand zi Trost und Lust
In Einsamkeit mir weihn,
Kein Angebinde einer Brust,
Die dir nur klopft allein.

Bei Tag und Nacht, in Lust und Schmerz
Muß im Verborgnen sich
Um Liebe härmen dieses Herz
Und still vergehn um dich.

  • Amazing! Your performance feels very true, which is rare, especially for someone with the amount of voice control that you obviously have. Your art transcends your technique. Beautiful!

  • Yes it's a beautiful performance, but unfortunately, I'm not the singer ...

  • Touching and charming performance:) And equally lovely photo - thanks so much indeed!

  • I think this might be what I love best: when ART combines with the "popular", with things that come from afar and deep down....

  • Beautiful, absolutely beautiful.

  • @sofiadelgreco You are most welcome. If you are interested in Beethoven, Maynard Solomon's biography is absolutely stunning and I highly recommend it.

  • @Divinemetal thank you for this information. It is a very beautiful song!

  • @sofiadelgreco According to Maynard Solomon's biography of Beethoven, unfortunately, Beethoven did not really know the difference; several of his Irische Lieder are from Sir Walter Scott's (a Scottish writer) poems. He also wrote much of the music himself (instead of arranging folk melodies for every song) and, as he was very pressured by deadlines, he wrote the only way that he could, which was in his Classical/Romantic style. His most underrated works nonetheless, in my opinion.

  • How lovely! I suppose this must come into the 'Scottish songs' category as Byron was, I think, half Scottish, but it has, to me, an Irish feel (I am half Irish) and the picture looks like Ireland! It is delightful anyway ( and a lovely voice!) Thank you!
