At 17, DeAndre Way became known around the world as Soulja Boy on the success of his number one hit, "Crank That." The song was also number one for seven weeks on the iTunes digital download site in September 2007. Despite the criticism from other rap stars like 50 Cent and Jay-Z, Soulja Boy says the numbers speak for themselves. Larry London caught up with Soulja Boy on tour in Washington

We hate Soulja Boy because he is part of the people who are dumbing down the music that influenced an entire generation. He is being signed instead of the quick-witted and clever MCs that are still broke doing rap battles on the corner while Soulja Boy puts out his mind-numbing music to audiences who wouldn't know good music if it hit them in the face. It's not about money. It is about skill and integrity, and Soulja Boy has none of that.

Rakim, Mos Def, DMX...these are real artists.

  • This guy isn't stupid at all.He just chooses to dumb his music down. He's moving with the times using the latest methods. What can I say? He's 17 and I'm not gonna hate on him

  • you forgot the record came b4 the 8 track

  • 50 and Snoop criticized and dissed Soulja Boy's music and now they both sing with him. I agree that the 90's rap was more intelligent but we have to face the truth: 102,843,822 views only on "Crank That"!!

  • lol pple keep talkin shit bout soulja boy... jus give it up. its a new era. im 20 yrs old i grew up listenin to snoop, 50 cent, an jay z an other pple. the time of real rap music is over. "nothing last forver" if u havent noticed the new thing of 2011 is the house music...... i rather listen to soulja boy then all that jersey shore bullshit music

  • very smart move ofcourse, cause it was very popular at the time, nobody can ignore that, but that doesn't make him better then artists like bone thugs, tech n9ne, cyne, he's wack at actual hiphop, but what ever it is what he does he does it good

  • its a new generation so it has to change. but old scholl whips new anyday hands down!!! but again its a new generation and people just have to except it.

  • Its hip-hop, everthing changes, like old school rock is better then new rock, Soulja Boy is the smartest artist ever and he is right about onething, cd is dieing. He is showing people how to make money other ways then cds.
