So many experts, so little time. This is how I test clutch fans. Obviously NOTCSLED knows the fan is shot, so there is no danger in his seemingly cavalier attitude to the dangers of jamming your hand in the fan. Recovery time is also of note; it takes quite a while for the fan to recuperate rotational momentum, dead give away of failed clutch.

i lost 4 fingers but i know my fan clutch is working thanks

normaslly youd use a peice of cardboard or sumtin 2 b safe

WELL FOR ME IS NORMAL TO DO IT IF THE FAN CLUTCH IS NOT WORKING IN THE PERFECT CONDITIONS.....and if the fan clutch was working maybe was not too hot, dont try it again if is a new fan clutch...people this guy is not stupid he already knew the clutch was not working....come on people
-
Very Unsafe. Better to shut engine off and then try.
-
The mechanical fan clutch in traditional use is Disengaged when Cold. Meaning what you just saw is perfectly normal but still not safe for your hands. If engine is hot fan clutch should be FULLY engaged meaning its not possible to stop that fan without missing fingers. Done.

Such a bad idea, my couplings seized at the moment and that would take my fingers off.
Just block the radiator so the car heats up and compare the airflow to a cold engine.
-
Yeah not too safe if the clutch was working it could produce some serious torque.
But yes that clutch is shot the viscous oil probably has leaked out.
-
really unsafe , dude.
really stupid DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU NEVER WANT THE OPTION OF PICKING THINGS UP WITH YOUR FINGERS AGAIN.
to actually test one run engine until warm (normal temp) then TURN OFF the engine and see if it resists turning.

Engine hot = dead clutch. Metal fan and working clutch = chopped off fingers!
