Lesson 11:
Many years after the flood, God called Abraham to be the father of a very large nation through whom all peoples of the earth would receive a special spiritual blessing.

Promise to Abraham- Genesis 11:31-12:7
a. Read Genesis 11:31-32 and locate Ur of the Chaldeans, Haran, and Canaan on the map on pages 8 and 9.
b. Read Genesis 12:1-3. At the end of verse 3 there is one special promise to keep in mind. Since the promise that all families of the earth would be blessed through Abraham is repeated several times in the Bible, obviously it is very important. In what sense could this promise be realized? To learn the answer to this question, you will need to wait and see how The Story of Hope eventually develops.
c. Read Genesis 12:4-7. What additional promise did God give Abraham in verse 7?

Lesson 12:
God tested Abrahams faith by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, his son through whom the spiritual blessing would come, but at the last moment God provided a substitute sacrifice.

Offering of Isaac- Genesis 22:1-18
a. Read Genesis 22:1-14. Two obvious questions: Why did God ask Abraham to sacrifice his son? and Why did Abraham obey such and unusual command? The answers have something to do with what Abraham believed that God could do.
-See verse 5. Then read Hebrews 11:17-19. What did Abraham believe?
-See Genesis 22:7-14. How was Abrahams faith confirmed in this case?
b. Read Genesis 22:15-18. What promise do you see in verse 18? What is slightly different here, as compared to Genesis 12:3? Hint: Compare in you with in your seed
c. Later, Isaac had a special son named Jacob (whom God renamed Israel) who had twelve sons. As Israel was preparing to die, what promise did he make to his son Judah in the first few words of Genesis 49:10? Hint: A scepter is a staff held by a king as an emblem of royal authority.

  • Ibrahim had 2 sons how do you know witch one was about to get secrifice. I realy dont think you got your facts right. what ever happend to Ishmael

  • Thanks for the comment. These lessons are based on the Bible and according to the story in the Bible, it was Isaac who was taken to be sacrificed. I am guessing that you have a Muslim background and believe that God's promise is fulfilled through Ishmael. I understand your argument, but if you follow Biblical teaching, the promise was through the child that Sarah would have, not Hagar. I really do wish that Abraham would have trusted God's promise of having a child through Sarah, but he didn't.
