In February of 2001, at the age of 33, Shonda was diagnosed with stage 2 malignant melanoma. A total of 5 surgeries left 25 scars crisscrossing her back, arms, legs and chest. Shonda and her family were living in Arizona at the time and they immediately adopted responsible sun habits into their daily routines.

In October 2001 Shondas husband, Curt Schilling, won the World Series co-MVP honor for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The media quickly picked up on her skin cancer diagnosis. This is her story.

  • 75% chance of getting melanoma the FIRST time you use a tanning bed.

  • @truthabouttanning It is erroneously thought that a tan is healthy and protects you from sunburn. In actuality, a tan results from the body defending itself against further damage from UV radiation. A tan does somewhat protect the body from the sun, BUT a tan over white skin acts only as about an SPF 4 sunscreen.

  • Don't women say if you want to be beautiful you have to pay? By de way i think it is a wrong expression, cuz women are always wrong

  • You had 95% survival WTF are you talking about not having wife?

  • I want to go out with you

  • @fuchsiasteve1 yes it can run in some families good advice

  • @truthabouttanning No the tan is trying to protect you from FURTHER DAMAGE.

  • @Ryan1111111able Yes it is trying to protect itself...from SUNBURN! Why do you think people that have lived in sunny locales for hundreds of years have dark skin? It is to protect from sunburn, not because they are "damaged". People from Northern latitudes have light skin so that the "tan" or dark skin does not block UV absorpsion, which is needed for the body to naturally make Vitamin D. The amount of sun needed varies by skin type, but it is needed by all human life.

  • @truthabouttanning “There's no safe way to get a tan,”Tanned skin is damaged skin. When your skin changes colour after being exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays, it's because your skin is trying to protect itself.”...
