A view of my backyard garden in Sierra Madre, Calif., on Oct. 29, 2010. The garden was installed in 1916 by Tokutaro Kato and is Southern California's oldest private Japanese garden. We believe that the late Zen master Maezumi Roshi tended the garden when he first came to America in 1956 as a young priest . My family has lived here and cared for it since 1997. With its continuous teaching of attention, impermanence, patience, forgiveness, time and eternal life, the garden inspired a good portion of my book, Hand Wash Cold: Care Instructions for an Ordinary Life. If you're ever in the neighborhood, please come see it for yourself. I always tell people that if the garden isn't seen, it's not alive.
