In the past, he felt that with all of the astronomical odds of everything that had to occur within fractions of seconds for the Big Bang, much less the development of biological life that he believed there was a God. So he changed his mind, big deal. Dr. Francis Collins converted from an Atheist to a Christian. People have different opinions, including scientists.

@ChannelNoob Who gave you the idea that Stephen Hawking was the smartest man in the world. He just got well-known, primarily for his theories about black holes which after 30 years or so turned out all to be incorrect. There were other scientists who strongly disagreed with him, equally educated and brilliant, just not touched by the media.

Well, Stephen Hawking also made millions of dollars and got much attention regarding his intuitively ridiculous idea that black holes were actually windows to other universes. He kept that up for about 30 years and was eventually forced to concede that he was entirely wrong. So his biggest theory and he was wrong about it. Obviously if a black hole is dense matter, it's not going to be a "window". There have also been other giants in the field of physics that were theists.
