India's Monkey Menace

Monkeys are such a menace to farmers in northern India, that it's becoming a major election issue. Politicians are promising to solve the problem. Let's take a look.

It's the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, and farmers are hopeful their elected representatives will rescue them from the menace of monkey attacks. The farmers say they will vote for the candidate who assures them of getting rid of the monkeys.

[Ravan, Voter]:
"We face a lot of problems from monkeys and it has become a big threat. No government listens to our pleas but during elections they approach us with false promises. They have done nothing to solve the problems."

The monkeys have become a threat to crops, which forces farmers to leave their fields in search of a new place, safe from monkeys. As election fever grips the country, political parties are trying to achieve maximum mileage out of the issue.

The state's opposition party blames the ruling government for not taking any action while India's main opposition party promises to solve the problem in the next five years.

[Prem Kumar Dhumal, Indian Opposition Leader]:
"We have given the permission to kill the monkeys, but people are not ready as religious sentiment is attached to monkeys."

The outcome of the five-stage election will be known on May 16.

Toss out tons of small monkey snacks spiked with birth control pills. Then they won't reproduce so fast and you can haul off the ones that are left.
