  • They are not solid rockets, they are tracking flares used on test flights. The aircraft is launched on a hydrogen peroxide powered piston ramp.

  • My Father came back from Canada to where he had been evacuated to relatives in `45. He went home to Petworth in W Sussex and used to watch and listen to them as they flew along the Downs to Southampton and Portsmouth where the engine would cut out, there would be a silence then an explosion. Day and night the planes at Tangmere would go up and try to tip them off course.
