"In our tenure on this planet, we've accumulated dangerous evolutionary baggage; propensities for agression and ritual, submission to leaders, hostility to outsiders; all of which puts our survival in some doubt. We've also acquired compassion for others, love for our children, a desire to learn from histroy and experience, and a great soaring passionate intelligence; the clear tools for our continued survival and prosperity." "National boundaries are not evident when we view the Earth from space. Fanatic ethnic, or religious, or national identifications are a little difficult to support when we see our planet as a fragile blue crescent fading to become an inconspicuous point of light against the bastion and citadel of the stars." - Carl Sagan

  • Few people actually realized how brilliant Sagan was. He was prophet of sorts.

  • He speaks the truth, and its sad that so few people put his ideas into practice.

  • @OtonielRochaSC If only he were to simply exist, sure. But... I see no reason to suppose the existence of any such being.

  • Sagan knew, perhaps, a portion 0.00000000000000000001 the things of God.

  • @MarvelsofaLifetime i agree, totally epic :) the man had a way with words

  • @MarvelsofaLifetime I know. The first time I heard him say thos words, it was like being struck by a liberating lightning bolt. EVERYONE should study the Cosmos, its mysteries and attempt to unravel them or least love them...

  • Great words, great man.

  • This dialogue is contained in its entirety in the song "A Shift In Orbit" by Billions & Billions. And it is beautiful.

  • “the bastion and citadel of the stars…” – that’s the most epic thing I’ve ever heard in my life.

  • You and me both Carl.
