From Seattle, The Ventures defined instrumental guitar rock in the 1960s. Their hits bookended the decade, from 1960s Walk Dont Run to 1969s Hawaii Five-O. Nokie Edwards twang-guitar and the crisp rhythm of Don Wilson, bassist Bob Bogle and drummer Mel Taylor gave every Ventures album their trademark bent note sound. Long admired by other bands like the Beatles (and especially George Harrison), Stephen Stills, Joe Walsh, Aerosmith, and others, the Ventures hit the Billboard chart nearly three dozen times in the 1960s. The transparent stereo mixes enabled guitarists to isolate and learn every riff, an idea that fueled 1965s essential instruction LP Play Guitar With the Ventures. Founders of surf rock, the Ventures inspired a classic line of Mosrite guitars and have maintained a flourishing touring and recording career for decades, especially in Europe and Japan.

  • Why is Nookie back on bass? Bogle was the bassist before he got sick.

  • The guy in the center at 1:45 is Dave Clark of the 5 fame.

  • Inducting them?!? Their names shoulda been carved into the bedrock!

  • Hi there! You really defined the instrumental rock in the 60s. And as someone told

"I can't even begin to speak of the joy these guys have given me". It's the same feeling I got when I discovered a completely unknown band (for me) - THE ZETTLERS. Check up their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah".

Totally fucking amazing because the recordings were made as early as 1965. Unbelievable!!!!!!

  • Thank you so much for posting this piece of musical history....no group will ever top the Ventures...they are true musical genus

  • @spacepatrolman he was right when he said they heard walk dont run on a chet atkins record who simplified johnny smiths original version which was based on softly as a morning sunrise

  • @HOC666 yea walk dont run was a hit single on dolton records later in the US if you listen to the other songs on the top twenty then it was all boring compared to the ventures

  • I can't even begin to speak of the joy these guys have given me - so many great hours grooving to those old vinyl Venture records with the cool covers and dynamic riffs inside! Outside of Jimi Hendrix, I can't imagine who else besides The Ventures has inspired so many kids to buy an electric guitar. That's truly a missing element amongst today's youth, who can inspire the MASSES with a musical instrument? I hope some do and will!

  • @emerpus01

Actually, Jerry joined in 1969 on an album titled "The Horse." Him and Nokie have switched back and forth for years. There have actually been tours where Bogle didn't attend while Nokie and Jerry shared the bass/lead guitar duties.
