For hours and hours of free video tutorials, please visit

http://ipaintgirls.com

To easily follow this series on painting manga and comics, go to the site, and then go to Digital Painting, and scroll down. I will be updating as I put the new parts up. To see my artwork, go to the gallery. Visit the forums to ask me questions, or to post your own art, or tutorials. Thanks.

This new, free series is all about coloring manga and comics, but the techniques can be used for painting as well. I teach techniques in this series that I haven't shown on any of my other videos, so that is exciting.

I show how to clean your scanned line work and remove the white so that the lines stay crisp. I show how to color the lines without coloring anything else but the lines. I also show other techniques for changing line color, but the lock transparency pixels is the best, I think. I will be showing how to get that nice cell shaded look that is so often seen in comics, especially manga. In the end, you'll be able to apply this knowledge and create great colored works of art. 

If you want to color this Lara Croft drawing I did, you can go to www.ipaintgirls.com and then go to gallery. Be sure to download the full sized version. If you do color it, link back to me, and let me know so I can check it out, yanno? Coolness.

  • are you using a wacom tablet? or any other graphic tablet for this image? Because when i do my stuff i tend to just paint everything in manually, its time consuming but i prevents those white lines.

  • @lonSinceInsane I use a Wacom. A faster way, is to outline what you want to color, then use the magic wand tool, then make an action that expands the selection by 2-4 pixels, then fills in with forground color. In a new video about coloring comics, I show this method.

  • hey bro im gonna sound stupid here but when i load the lare pic in and start to select with the wand and shift key and press on the face it is selecting the whole pic and also when i zoom in the pic the lines start to break up, also where can i find the brushes your using..:)

  • @laggerjoe I used standard brushes. Hard round brush with size and opacity set to pen pressure. Hard brush with size set to pen pressure. Soft brush with opacity set to pen pressure.

Did you go to select color range, and choose white, and hit delet, so that you have only lines on a transparent layer?

  • Did you leave your name and e-mail? If so, I sent ya the brushes. If you didn't get them, please message me again with your e-mail and name. Be sure to check spam, but I'm not sure why my e-mail would go there, but you never know.

  • thx!

  • i like how you skip all the repetitive parts

  • what's ur DA?

  • Hey i got it! Use the "lock transparency box" on the lines layer, and simply fill it with the full black (C-100 M-100 Y-100 K-100) and you will see beautifully black lines with no grey shit in between! Beautiful!

  • I could send you an image of what im talking about if you like? you can kind of see it there in my profile pic...... try doing 2 different gradients yourself with those two different blacks

  • Also! You could just put your layer with the lines on "multiply"....... although that may affect your ability to colourise them

  • Yo! I have a question! You know that horrible grey shit you see between black lines and colour? Or in a gradient from black to a colour? Well if you select the black you use you will notice that it's levels are - (C-0 M-0 Y-0 K-100) and if you change that black to (C-100 M-100 Y-100 K-100) you will get a perfectly smooth transition with none of that grey shit in between, it's like two completely different blacks! Now i have to figure out how to change the CMYK levels of my scanned lines? Anyone?

  • do u have black people skin tones?

  • You are a life saver with your tutoring. I mainly draw on paper and seldom ink but, now since you have to be flexible with everything I am thankful for your insight.
