Three holes of golf in World Class Leaderboard Golf for the Sega Genesis. Actual console play. Not emulated.

While it is certainly a full-featured and visually appealing golf simulation, World Class Leaderboard Golf is, unfortunately, marred by an overly complicated approach to hitting the ball. Adapting to the click-hold-release action and semi-circular orientation of the swing meter in World Class Leaderboard Golf is more difficult than adapting to the swing meter in any other 16-bit golf game I've played. The swing action in World Class Leaderboard Golf is especially difficult because the speed of the swing meter varies, shot-to-shot, according to a handful of in-game variables. Coupled with the ball's hypersensitivity to the wind and some, often, "wonky" physics that govern the way the ball bounces, and even the best drives are lucky to hold the fairway. Prepare to make most approach shots from the rough. Don't get to far into the trees, however, or you might find it takes several shots to get yourself out. Thankfully, approach shots tend to be very forgiving. In fact, it can be difficult not to hit the green with an iron in hand. Unfortunately, club lengths aren't displayed on the main game screen. Instead, they must be memorized or else referenced from the "Caddie Advice" menu before each shot.

Putting is fairly straightforward, but without any indication of the putters maximum distance, it's often difficult to judge the speed of a putt. My best results have come from assuming that each tick mark on the swing meter represents ~ 7 yds. The game includes four courses and an array of gameplay options, like skill levels, Stableford scoring, matchplay and "skins" competitions. In-game variables like green and fairway conditions add depth to the game. However, as I alluded to above, some settings give rise to rather peculiar physics.

World Class Leaderboard Golf is a challenging game. With repeated exposure and a great deal of practice, it becomes a reasonably fun and engaging experience, but until that point, and sometimes even after, the game is a struggle.

  • That ball's got some bounce!

Personally I prefer Pebble Beach Golf Links, for the physics, gameplay and looks of the game.
