Check out http://www.freeoldtestamentaudio.com/hebrew for free resources for learning Hebrew!

This is the song "Hoshi'a na" from the Hebrew version of the movie.
After countless requests for lyrics and translation I decided to take matters into hand. The VBR MP3 audio stream gave me hell with the synch XD Anyway, the clip is by someone else on youtube but the subs are entirely mine, so give credit :)

Note: As the Hebrew soundtrack was never published, so were the lyrics, therefore, the lyrics brought here are entirely the way I hear the song. The chorus is quite hard to understand even for Hebrew speakers, since they're not heard well, and they use biblical Hebrew.

  • Does "yaldi" mean "my son"? I notice it twice: once for "My good and tender son" and the other "My son, you will get this from me." And do the letters "ve" have something to do with "and"? I see them in a lot of conjunction sentences.

3:26---Which of these words means "mother"?

Sorry for all the questions, but I want to learn.

  • @mcmptn That is mostly correct. "Yaldi" means "my child" (for boys only). The letter "Vav" which sounds like "V" is applied to the beginning of a word when wishing to express conjunction, with different vowel sounds depending on the word (Ve, Va) for example: Esrim VaTesha (twenty nine), or Ish Ve'Isha (a man and a woman). The word you refer to is "Imcha", which means "your mother". It is a combination of the word "Em" (mother) and a particle denoting posession for 2nd person male "Cha".

  • Personally, I think that the opening scene is more powerful in Hebrew. I love the original, english lyrics too, but there's just something about hearing that lullaby in hebrew that's just so touching. <3

  • I love when hebrews say the Names of God " Elohim, Eli " <3 I love hebrew.

  • Somehow I feel that the Hebrew version has a greater effect on me than the English. But both sung very beautifully in both languages.

  • @clickychiky14

    i am not shouting

  • @shaharmos God is spelled with a capital G. Unless your talking about a pagan God like in Greek mythology

  • @shaharmos God is spelled with a cap I

  • @ilikesnachos

Good luck with that! Really complicated language, but it worth it :)

  • @Sephiroth21682

ofra haza is singing in this movie

  • @Sephiroth21682

Jews were persecuted and beaten in there own country.

And therefore unable to develop a deep Jewish culture like as other countries.

    THE 3 IMPORTANAT THINGS

    FOR ALL JEWS ARE :

    believe in god

    the torah book

    and land of israel

  • Originally I watched the English version, however, I wanted to hear the characters speak their mother tongue. I really loved being able to hear the Jewish characters speak Hebrew, it felt more authentic.. then the Egyptians started speaking Hebrew... *Ahem*... momemt ruined.

I really loved the opening song! The woman singing has a powerful voice!

  • @breeeegs well said.

  • @HippieLuzzu its interesting how elohim and eli is similar to how muslims say God, Allah.
