Sanshin and Shamisen are related instruments but theyre not the same thing. A Sanshin is shorter and make from snake skin while a Shamisen is longer and made of either cat or dog skin. The Sanshin is from Okinawa. The Shamisen came from the Sanshin. The Sanshin came as a result of the Chinese Sanxian. Though the Sanshin and Sanxian have similar appearance but different in height and playing technique. Both Sanshin and Sanxian simple mean "Three strings".

The tuning is called Niagari Strings are a 5th and 4th apart

The Yoshida's do play this song. Most all shamisen artists play this piece though. :-)
It's a semi-improvisational piece (I.e, the phrases can be moved around to the likeness of the player) so the melody varies on the player. I take a lot of phrases and stuff from Asano Sho. (who you can see on youtube)
