It astonishes me that people who don't understand artists still insist that this must be because they are not artists. The more distinctive an artist's voice the more likely they are to be misunderstood and criticised for not being like everybody else. This is like the late great Pina Bausch in the tradition of modern dance from Kurt Joos. In dance theatre the dancers present character and emotion not pure abstract movement.

To his credit, I heard that he's a really nice guy.

Talent as a choreographer he has none.

Saw Pitié in Ghent last week. More of the same.

Amazing dancers though. I felt sorry for them, not getting any decent phrases to show on stage.

At least they get a steady paycheck. That's worth a lot for a dancer. Most struggle constantly.

So, you've gotta love Belgium for that. Even if quality is not on the menu.

An anti-semite charlatan? Platel went to the Occupied Territories on different occasions and saw with his own eyes. When he gets angry about that, that's not because he's an anti-semite but because of what the Israeli's do. And his anger doesn't make him an anti-semite, although he's probably anti-zionist by now, which is not the same thing. It's a fine distinction that makes a world of difference.

I saw this performed live, and, honestly, I didn't "get it". The dancers seemed to be very accomplished and flexible, but their talents were wasted on what looked like mostly random movements that had very little to do with the music (a meld of messed-up Monteverdi, Clapton, and others).

I went to the performance hoping to like it--I wish that somebody who "gets it" would explain it or help me appreciate it.

He is not an artist. It's a classic story of a no talent demigod using talented people for his own benefit. don't be fooled by the media. Use your own judgement. Ask questions. Give the great theatres of Europe back to the people. give art funding to talented people not the non talented family and friends of the governmental arts commissions. Reform arts funding.

Platel is a fake. He uses his psychiatric experience to manipulate people and has created a cult of performers that blindly give him their creations under extreme psychological pressure.

Platel is an anti-Semite charlatan. He has no talent except that he was born into a Belian well to do family with government connections. He uses dancers to make pieces that he takes credit for at the tax payers expense. Give art funding to the real artists.
