A quick animation I did using Blender, to test out my Cheyenne Class Refit model. The Cheyenne Class Starship was featured very briefly in the background of an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

  • I guess the chyanne class was TNG's answer to a modern rendition of the 4 nacell constalation class. What I don't get is why Greg Jine used highlighter marker pens for the nacells instead of the galaxy class ones. This ship was created from a kit bash using a 1701 D model but I just don't get why ships like these didn't get mor screen time or at least an episode recounting a mission or 2 of theirs. I wish paramount would bring ST back & do a series with a ship like this instead of another 1701.

They were in a mad rush to finish those models in time for shooting. They were using standard ertl kits off of the shelves, and I suppose they did not have enough Galaxy class nacelles to use them on every ship. They were splitting the kits up to make different classes and so they were using the highlighters on the ships that they did not have proper nacelles for. I thought that was sort of clever, since they were just background models.

  • @BlindMansRevenge2002

I also wish these new classes had gotten some more screen time. But it seems like the franchise has pretty much moved on to a "new" timeline, and I think it is doubtful mainstream Trek will ever revisit the other classes in the Galaxy family in any meaningful way. (Except the Nebula Class, of course.) In a way though, I'm sort of glad that these ships will remain undefined, for us fanatics to tinker with unhindered by "cannon."

  • I was expecting the dish to separate with 1 set of nacelles, going up and away. A weapons core staying with the other 2 naccelles and Impluse section with the brifdge proceeding on. If you have to do a separation better to be able to do it while accelerating/ dodging than having to come to a vitual standstill to lett the impluse drive saucer separate the way you have it..........

  • @aloisgault

Yeah, that set up would also have worked. And then you would have two ships that were warp capable. I may build a new class of starship that does something like that.

Dude. we are all just burning oxygen anyway...

And for the record, it was about five hours, and yes, yes, I had a blast.

  • Not all ships have a deflector dish in Star Trek. For instance the Constellation class, the Apollo class and its refit, the Discovery class and the Ford Mondeo

Yeah, I have had the same thought. There's an interesting overlap between a ship that good for extended deep space exploration, and frontier patrol and regulation. In both cases it would be advantageous if your ship were rugged, and had lots of built in redundancies. I think this ship would be pretty good at Both.

  • @Gryphon1973 Thanks for the details. I guess your right. A warp field is a warp field whether there are 2 nacelles or 4 I guess. I can see now what this ship would probably be used for. Like you said, deep space research missions. I also think it would be well suited for research missions in disputed territories where hostile contact is likely. Unless of course the hostile force is centuries ahead in technology or shows up with an entire armada LOL.

As for the four nacelles, I don't imagine they help too much with raw speed, per se. But I envision the redundant nacelles as giving the ship more stamina, able to operate at higher warp and red line for longer periods. Also, the ship would be able to operate at warp even if one or two of the nacelles were out of commission, making it a hardy, reliable space frame for deep space. That's my take on the subject, anyway.

  • @Turdbuckethat

(Cont.) The Saucer is designed to serve as a research base, and can stay stationary or move about at impulse doing long-term research, while the Stardrive can serve as defense or even run tangential missions. So, yeah, the Stardrive is a completely operational starship unto herself.

  • @Turdbuckethat

I'm always happy for two nice words. It's much better than we sometimes get.

Yeah, I agree this seems much easier to take apart and put back together, partly because you have more to guide you, and partly because the ship is so much smaller. The Galaxy Class was made to separate rarely, only in times of emergency. I imagine that this ship is designed to operated as two vessels as part of its normal operational profile.
