Tutorial on how to use Photo Booth and iMovie to make pixilations.
Written Instructions:
1-Open Photo Booth from your Dock or the Applications folder. The iSight camera automatically turn on, and you will be able to to see whatever the camera is pointing at (usually yourself).
2- Use the red button with a camera icon or command + T to take a picture. You will see and hear a countdown starting from 3 so you can get ready for the picture.
3- After the picture has been taken you will see it added to unto the row just below the camera window.
4 - Repeat step 2, changing your position slightly in front of the camera every time until you have about 12 pictures.
5 - You can quickly 'preview' your animation by selecting the first picture in the series and with the right arrow key scrub through all of them.
6 - The pictures you take in Photo Booth are automatically recorded into the Pictures folder in your profile. They are inside the Photo Booth folder, and were named sequentially (Photo 1, Photo 2, etc...)
7 - Open iMovie. Once it's open, Create a New Project. Then, from a Finder window select all the pictures which make up you animation.
8 - Drag and drop the pictures in the iMovie timeline. iMovie will show a prompt which says 'Importing Stills'
9 - By default, iMovie will show each picture for 4 seconds, with a type of 'zoom in' called Ken Burns for each picture. We will remove these effects and alter the timing in Step 10.
10 - Select all pictures in your timeline. You will notice a yellow border along whatever is highlighted. With all the pictures selected, click on the small blue gear in any of the pictures, and choose 'Cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation'.
11 - In the video viewer window's upper left hand corner you will see 3 options: Fit, Crop and Ken Burns. Choose the 'Fit' option, and press the blue 'Done' button on the upper right corner.
12 - Once more, select all the pictures using command+A. Click on the small blue gear on any of the selected pictures and choose 'Clip Adjustments'. In the clip duration field, type 0.2. This will make each picture last 2 frames, therefore doubling the time length of the animation. Click on the blue 'Done' button.
13 - Press the space bar to preview your animation in real time.
14 - When finished, render your movie so you can save it and view it anywhere.
The good: this method allows you to make pixilation using only the iMac and its included software.
The bad: taking pictures with Photo Booth takes too long (because of the countdown) and they still need to be imported into iMovie before you can really see your animation.
Thanks dude. Pretty helpful! :D
