  • And sometimes you hire a guide and learn how to fish. Just kidding. But seriously, you have way too much slack in your line and are trying to launch the poor fish into orbit with your hook set attempts. Lower your rod tip closer to the water(7 or 8 o'clock instead of 9 or 10) and strip line in faster so the line between your rod tip and the water tightens up quicker. When you see a strike LIGHTLY BUT SWIFTLY lift up on your rod tip from 8 o'clock to 12 o'clock.

    Or it could be that holding the camera in the hand that I usually use for line control meant I was always fishing with way too much slack.
