Babies bearing brunt of Afghan wars - 3 Feb 09

Decades of war in Afghanistan have left the health system in ruins, and the civilan population at severe risk by disease and injury.

The situation is especially grave for pregnant women. Afghanistan has some of the highest maternity and infant mortality rates in the world.

Al Jazeera's Teresa Bo reports from the Children's Hospital in the capital Kabul.

I am surprised that no one mentions the Talibans in this context. The way they systemetically prohibited women to be trained in any profession. Hence the lack of midwifes and female doctors. However, male doctors are not allowed to examine the genital area of women. Put those two things together and you figure out why the birth related mortality rate is so high (amongst other reasons).

Who is really responsible for this pathetic condition of Afghanistan.. Please work for the good of Afghanistan people.. leave aside differences.. whatever it is.. They have suffered more than enough..

help us? its a sad story to hear afghans expecting the world to help charity label is not what a people want. majority of destruction and looting in afghanistan has been done by afghans. to unite and stop arab culture from destroying afghan culture is the first step and understanding that afghanistan is not a poor country and if it was not being looted by afghans it would be able to feed,shelter, provide education and defend its borders and much more just with afghan resources .
