If you believe polls, only 21% of Americans currently identify themselves as Republicans. The problem is that the natural rifts have finally opened up between fiscal conservatives and social conservatives.

I can't speak for the social conservatives, but fiscal conservatives are sick and tired of bible thumpers and conspiracy nuts hijacking the party and its message. Quit jerking around and start talking about something that actually matters (e.g. restraints on spending).

Collins supported Bush neo-con foreign policy: the same goes for Kirk, Snowe or Specter. Why are they called moderates? Only because they are pro-choice and support some gay rights. And what kind of fiscal conservative supports a $800 billion stimulus package when budget deficit is out of control? I´m a social moderate but would choose Pat Buchanan over those fakes any day

Daddymak9, you're comment doesn't make sense, Ron Paul is very liberal on social and foreign policy issues, but very conservative on economics, that is the opposite of Arlen Specter. Specter is conservative on foreign policy issues and centrist on social issues, supporting anti-drug laws, tough crime laws, and the death penalty, and is fairly liberal on economics. For the most part Ron Paul would represent a libertarian strand of GOP thinking while Specter would be centrist or liberal

I was never big on the Ron Paul bandwagon but pretty soon, he won't be welcome in the Republican party either. They pushed out Chuck Hagel, now Arlen Specter. Pretty soon, Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins will be the target of Club for Growth and other nutbag right wing organizations. If I were Nancy Pelosi, I'd try to cut a deal with Paul and try to get him to switch parties. If not, the GOP will just force him out. Losing Arlen Specter is a big hit for the GOP, whether or not they admit it

Really? I wasn't aware the Democrats had fraudantly moved 200,000 registered Republicans over to the Democratic Party or Independent. Like a true conservative, you ignore the reality and instead create an excuse absolving your party of any fault in the loss. I like that! Keep it up and hopefully we'll increase our majority for the next 3 or 4 elections.
