Karla and I visited this amazing museum and captured the video which explains the terrible gunfight that happened that fateful day. The Mexican Revolution Museum, also known as the Casa de los Hermanos Serdán, but for translation clarification "hermanos' can mean siblings, so really it's a sister and two brothers ~ Carmen, Aquiles, and Maximo respectively. The first battle of the Mexican Revolution took place here on November 18, 1910, when the Serdan family were betrayed two days before the planned uprising against President Porfirio Diaz. It erupted into a bloody battle between the Federal Army and the apartment residents resulting in basically a massacre. The house retains the bullet marks from the battle. The museum depicts the life and times of Aquiles Serdán (1877-1910) and his family, and has a room dedicated to the women of the Revolution. Even their mother picked up a rifle and got on the rooftop to help her sons and daughter since she was the one who instilled in them their morals and beliefs. She even shot a canon! Go grandma!
Side note: It's also quite fateful that we were staying in the hotel Casa de la Palma in the Porfiriana suite dedicated to the dictator Porfirio Diaz. A professor from the University Museum ( Casa de los Muñecos) which we visited next admitted that the people did owe much to this man, who by whatever culpable means brought much progress to the city including railroads, water, telegraph, telephone, electric light, modernization, and economic growth. I feel like this uprising and dissent is a powerful example of the will and desire of the Mexican people. Mexico is not just Rosarito and Tijuana, so please explore this wonderful Valle de Mexico including the colonial city of Puebla, and enjoy the stunning cathedrals, rich history and gracious people of this amazing country.
