Republic Day Parade in New Delhi

And today India celebrated its 59th Republic Day with a parade in New Delhi. The country took the opportunity to showcase its military and cultural achievements.

STORY:
The president and the Supreme Commander of the Armed forces opened the celebrations.

Republic Day is a day when many Indians are honored and decorated for their service to the nation.

On show too is Indias military prowess. Army, navy and the air force showed their capabilities. The army was represented by the mounted cavalry and mechanized columns. Nuclear-capable missiles followed on mobile launchers.

The grand finale of the parade was the spectacular fly past by MI-35 helicopters and fighter jets.

Security was beefed up in the capital and other parts of India during the celebrations in response to Novembers terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

India became a republic on January 26, 1950.
