Salome Sandovals Voice Graduate Recital
Gods and Mortals
Program notes
Mazzocchis (1592-1665) compositions contained some of the earliest printed dynamic indications, including signs for crescendo, diminuendo, and messa di voce. La Madalena ricorre alle lagrime, is the controversial character Mary Magdalene who sings in metaphors about her love for Jesus Christ. The aria contains shocking harmonic shifts and the use of glissando. Mary Magdalene was included in the program because she has been depicted throughout centuries as an ambiguous figure of sacred and secular love for the mortal god of Christianity, and the theme of the concert is gods and mortals.
Translations:
You bitter tears, take pity and come to the aid of a languishing soul: in a swollen river flow there where once, alas, clambered the cruel torments of Hell and the mortal wound. The bloodless Redeemer wished to heal her, but the precious flood of this blessed blood would have been shed in vain for her without the afflicted humor of my tears. Therefore unceasingly rise up, you bitter tears, to the eyes of this repentant heart, and spill forth, since for you alone I thirst. If Heaven is pleased with your liquor, I shall say that you are that water that came forth with his blood from the wound of Jesus.
