Mau Forest is the largest indigenous montane forest in East Africa. As the largest water catchment area in Kenya, Mau Forest is one of Kenya's important 'water towers': many rivers originate from the forest, including Ewaso Ng'iro River (southern), Sondu River, Mara River and Njoro River. These rivers feed for example Lake Nakuru, Lake Natron and the Masai Mara.
Forest destruction in the past 10-20 years is resulting in low water levels during the dry season with disastrous effects for both people and wildlife. Reforestation of Mau is urgently needed to curb this trend.
As a volunteer in the Mau Forest Reforestation Programme you will get hands-on experience with tree nursery management and reforestation activities, but also participate in conservation education and wildlife surveys.
Experience the authentic culture of the Ogiek tribe and help these communities to restore their forests, one tree at a time!
