"Wagon Wheel" Lyrics:
Headed down south to the land of the pines
And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline
Starin' up the road
And pray to God I see headlights

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours
Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers
And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh
I can see my baby tonight

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me

Wagon Wheel lyrics are based on an original chorus by Bob Dylan, penned as Rock Me Mama in 1972 for the film soundtrack to Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid

I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time stringband
My baby plays the guitar
I pick a banjo now

Oh, the North country winters keep a gettin' me now
Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave
But I ain't a turnin' back
To livin' that old life no more

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke
I caught a trucker out of Philly
Had a nice long toke
But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap
To Johnson City, Tennessee

And I gotta get a move on fit for the sun
I hear my baby callin' my name
And I know that she's the only one
And if I die in Raleigh
At least I will die free

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel
Rock me mama anyway you feel
Hey mama rock me
Rock me mama like the wind and the rain
Rock me mama like a south-bound train
Hey mama rock me

I hate that Darius Rucker will get the credit for this song instead of O.C.M.S. and ultimately, Bob Dylan.

Man I love this. It's an old song but the version by the Old Crow Medicine Show is the best. Darius Rucker is having some success with the song right now but he is pretty much just copying the OCMS version. OCMS should re-release it.

people bitching about covers always makes me smile, cause what it comes down to, as a musician starting out, you got to play covers in a bar band to get the gig, getting people there so you can slip 1 or 2 of your own originals in a night, till you make a name for yourself and get signed...and covering an old song keeps it alive

Dylan apparently didn't steal much from those guys, because, those songs sound nothing like his "Rock Me Mama".

Quit arguing about who did what and who owns what and who's covering who and who deserves what and just enjoy the damn song. Jesus.

Thanks for the explanation grain. Let's face lots of songs are born from other songs.

darius doesnt take credit for this song, he leaves it to OCMS.. im sure theyre very grateful that hes redone their song and created much success out of it, hes not trying to steal it.. he just wants to keep it alive

Darius Rucker has an amazing version. Big deal if anyone doesn't like it, so many people sing other peoples song from before and it brings that song to more peoples eyes.

Bob Dylan like designed it. The dude from OCMS finished it and performed it. The roots of the song are really old. This finished product is the work of OCMS
