First point: Carthy says "you cannot ruin folk music, it's bigger than anyone!"
2nd point: John Kirkpatrick says the way to play English Folk tunes is to play them over and over again changing as you go along - and this arrangement does that exactly. So with 2 of the greats of English folk revival supporting this arrangement, I do feel that sanealladin needs to reconsider.

@Yehudittx This version was taken from a Suffolk railwayman in the 19th century, the Carthy version follows the sheet music, it is technically canonical. The tune was almost lost, typical of the English. The other versions are not equal to this one, many of them wittering affairs. If an arrangement is vague and mushy, it's useless, doesn't matter whether it is modern or not. This is one of the few Englsih tunes that can compete with the great Celtic tunes, it needs preservation not destruction.

@FaithHealer1 If you judge things this way, no piece of music, not even one by Take That, could be judged as bad, people could simply say 'it's not to your tastes', that approach leads to no great piece of music being valued. A melody can be embellished without being lost, the Chieftains demonstrate how to do this; Bellowhead simply descend into a pointless mush, that's not subtle. This tune is one of the few great melodies the English have retained, hence it should be properly looked after.

@TheSanealaddin There are umpteen versions of this with different melodies and treatments. I love Carthy but he's not canonical on this one.
For example Carthy' wife Norma sings one with a different equally venerable melody. And knowing Carthy, he probably messed with the melody anyway.)
Bellowhead are known for complicated "modern" arrangements; it's silly to criticize them for exactly what their style is.

I must say, I like this song! I don't know the Martin Carthy version yet, but I will see to that! I didn't know the band 'till recently. Their song "New York Girls" is the Hot Shot at the local radio station for this week, and that's my new favorite song for now!
Why are there no comments?????????

When will people realise that there's a difference between a piece of music being not to their tastes and it being bad? Just because this arrangement has other priorities than the melody (which is the simplest, easiest and most cliched element to emphasise) doesn't make it bad. The subtleties, the fact that the accompaniment evolves and is very rarely the same from line to line all make it a technically accomplished piece. Feel free to dislike it, but don't frame your opinion as fact.
