Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian, is an American recording artist, actress, director, and record producer. Referred to as the Goddess of Pop, and well known for her deep contralto vocal range, she has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, three Golden Globes, a Cannes Film Festival Award, and a People's Choice Award for her work in film, music and television.
Cher began her career as a backup singer and later came to prominence as one half of the pop rock duo Sonny & Cher with the success of their song "I Got You Babe" in 1965. She subsequently established herself as a solo recording artist, and became a television star in 1971 with The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, a variety show for which she won a Golden Globe. A well received performance in the film Silkwood earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1984. In the following years, Cher starred in a string of hit films including Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, and Moonstruck, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1988.
Cher is the only female solo artist to reach the Top Ten of the Billboard Hot 100 in each of the previous four decades. Her hit dance single "Believe" is her biggest-selling recording and was the best-selling single of 1999, having sold over 10 million copies worldwide. She holds the Hot 100 record for the longest hit-making career span, with 33 years between the release of her first and most recent #1 singles, in 1965 and 1999. Cher ended her 3-year-long "Farewell Tour" in 2005 as the most successful tour by a female solo artist of all time. With a career lasting over 45 years, Cher has sold over 100 million records worldwide. After a three-year hiatus and retirement from touring, Cher returned to the stage in 2008 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas where she is currently performing her show Cher at the Colosseum.
The Do You Believe? Tour, sometimes also known as The Believe Tour, was Cher's third solo concert tour. The tour which took place in 1999 and 2000, was used to promote her album Believe. The August 28, 1999 performance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena was made into the Emmy Awards-nominated HBO television special Live in Concert, which aired the following day, and by year's end was released on VHS and DVD. Cyndi Lauper, Michael McDonald, and Julio Iglesias Jr. were the opening acts at different times during the tour. The tour was very successful commercially, and in early December 1999 an announcement was made that 20 extra dates were being added in North America. At the time it was her highest-grossing tour ever at $160 million, although it would later be eclipsed by her marathon 2002-2005 Living Proof: The Farewell Tour.
As might be expected, Cher appeared in a variety of costumes during the performance. Her opening outfit, a spectacularly hideous affair involving a stringed skirt, meshed top over a cross, and a huge red wig, was dubbed self-depricatingly by her as the "Bozo the Clown-meets-Braveheart look" or the 'Super Groundforce Girl' referring to Charlie Dimmock from the popular-at-the-time Groundforce Gardening show. All in all there were 7 to 9 different ensembles, depending upon how one does the counting, with none lasting more than a handful of songs.
Reviews of the show were often favorable, given Cher's return to popularity and over-the-top appeal. The New York Times said Cher had "a quintessential rock voice ... spectacularly styled with a rough and tumble vaudevillian edge." The Washington Post viewed it as "a dynamic, over-the-top extravaganza." The Dallas Morning News said "her concert was entertaining and gleefully glitzy."
(Cher was 53 years old at the time of her Believe tour.)
