  • I learned something today: Don't argue with the experts. I checked with the museum where Maluti is preserved, and you are all right. Contrary to what I 'thought' I saw on the day (and what is recorded in Wikipedia), the engines are not Rolls Royce but Pratt and Whitney JT9D 7R4W. Thanks for correcting me and for taking the time to respond.

    Regards

    Luke.

  • Rollers went on Qantas VH-EAA & EAB also a couple of Saudi SPs from memory, SAA definitely Pratts.

  • Sorry to bother you partingtonmp, but these engines are defently Pratt and Whitney JT9D 7R4W engines. You can clearly tell by there appearence and shape. However some other airlines did have there 747sp's fitted with RR engines. You said that you found this info on wikipedia, well not everything on wikipedia is correct. Try seaching RR RB211 and P&W JT9D and you'll notice the difference.

  • yeah i noticed that too. I don't think they ever fitted Rolls-Royce engines on the 747SP

  • Great Video!! We'll miss these old birds.

The commentator mistakenly called the engines Rolls Royces. Not so, for these are Pratt and Whitney JT9-7F's
