Knowing how to make a tight, snug bed isn't just useful if you're in the military—you just may want to impress that special friend of yours...
To complete this How-To you will need:
A bed in need of making
A fitted sheet
A flat sheet
A blanket, comforter, or quilt
2 pillows
2 pillowcases
And a bedspread
A duvet (optional)
Step 1: Place top of fitted sheet
Stretch the top two corners of the fitted sheet over the two corners at the top end of the mattress.
Step 2: Place bottom of fitted sheet
Pull the sheet tight and stretch the bottom two corners over the bottom corners of the mattress.
Tip: The fitted sheet should fit snugly—if it doesn't, you have the wrong size sheets for your bed.
Step 3: Spread flat sheet
Spread the flat sheet over the bed face down—meaning the finished surface should be against the fitted sheet and the unfinished surface should be visible.
Step 4: Arrange sheet
Arrange the sheet so that it hangs evenly over both long sides of the bed, with the top edge hitting the top end of the mattress and the bottom edge hanging over the end.
Step 5: Tuck bottom
Tuck the bottom end of the sheet under the mattress, making sure it's smooth and not crumpled.
Step 6: Tuck one side
Tuck one side of the sheet under a long side of the mattress so a vertical fold is created at the bottom corner of the bed.
Step 7: Tuck rest of side
Continue to tuck the rest of the sheet along that side under the mattress, leaving a foot or two untucked at the top end.
Step 8: Tuck in other side
Repeat these steps on the other side of the bed, making sure to tug firmly on the sheet to create a smooth, tight surface.
Tip: If you use a duvet with a duvet cover that you can remove and wash, you don't need to use a flat sheet and a blanket.
Step 9: Spread blanket
Spread the blanket over the bed, aligning its long sides with the mattress's long sides.
Step 10: Position blanket
Position the blanket so there are 6" to 12" between its top and the top edge of the mattress. It should also hang evenly over the long sides.
Step 11: Tuck in bottom
Tuck the bottom end of the blanket under the bed as you did with the flat sheet, making sure not to crumple the edges and creating vertical folds at the corners.
Step 12: Tuck in both sides
Tuck in the blanket completely along both sides of the mattress.
Step 13: Fold top of sheet
Fold the loose portion at the top of the flat sheet over the blanket, smooth it out, and tuck in both sides.
Tip: If you have a comforter or thick quilt, you don't need to tuck it in—just place it atop the flat sheet.
Step 14: Spread bedspread
Spread the bedspread over the bed, making sure both sides and the bottom are draped evenly around the bed.
Step 15: Position pillows
And finally, put the pillows in pillowcases and position them at the top of the bed. Now rest easy knowing you could make the toughest drill sergeant proud...
