@catgi91745 "wife and a family" refers to his humanity. God came in a human form (Jesus) yet gave up leading a normal life. He didn't get to experience the joy that comes with family. It ends saying "you gave your ghost" and "you went up on a tree" referring to death (an almost exact quote is found in the gospels) and a tree is in reference to a cross

This video was kind of stupid but enlightening at the same time. I'm frazzled on the matter. I think it's only because I'm crazy about this song that I can excuse anything

this song is beautiful to me and any song maen anything to anyone when i listen to this sing its me saying i want to be alone with jesus then the corus then me singing to jesus saying what he gave up for me to be alone with me in spirit... i think this is so beautiful... I know God is real , and Ive never known a Man who Loved me like Jesus loves me.... <3
whether someone gets their inspiration for writing music from a lost love, a place in time, memory or some form of omniscient being it doesn't matter. I think all that matters in the case of music such as Sufjan Stevens is that it is sincere. You bring what he says to your own context. Really how many people know exactly what their favourite song was written about. You hardly ever will, you love it because of what you bring to it, your own meaning.

There doesn't have to be one true interpretation. Just because you assume the song holds a certain meaning doesn't mean everyone else comes to the same conclusion-- let them draw away what they want from the song.
