The college you and I attended, Florida Gulf Coast University is a beautiful example of how humans/property and nature can interact.

There is reason to study animals. First of all, we have highly complex intellects which provide us with the means of understanding them so we can better understand ourselves and our universe. All of this is quite obvious. However, there is no reason to torture an animal and furthermore, reports of any individual torturing an animal would indicate that this individual is a potential threat to humans and should be arrested and prosecuted and imprisoned.

Animals are not human, thus should not be considered human. Do I have the right to kill an animal and eat it, if I want to? Yes. Do I have the right to perform studies on an animal? Yes. Do I have the right to torture an animal? No. What is the difference between killing an animal, studying an animal, and torturing an animal? The difference exists in whether or not there is a reason to do one or the other. There is a reason to kill an animal. Either in self defense, or for food...

Now, is it possible that some warped liberal bureaucrat might try to utilize clauses of the ESA to counter conservative influence? Yes. People do things like that and yes, states rights is a valid and necessary constitutional amendment and property rights are central the fundamental principles of America and capitalism but there is a difference between our rights and ensuring that humans don't cause other species to go extinct...

@ExpandingUponWealth I agree with that one comment, however my point is that we need to consider animals as living beings that are capable of suffering. So yes we should put state rights as a priority to an extent, but it shouldn't be more important than our ethical treatment to animals.
